Defining Personal Values Supports Recovery From addiction
When people are addicted to alcohol or drugs, they often lose sight of their morals and what’s truly meaningful. The substance takes over and becomes their main focus. By figuring out their real personal values during the recovery process, encourages positive behaviour change.
Some important values could be dedication, honesty, and growth. People in recovery can ask themselves:
What and who is most important in my life?
How should I be treating my family and friends?
How do I want to take care of my health?
How do I want to spend my time and energy?
Then they can start making small choices each day that match up with those values.
How to decide what your values are
Living according to positive values gives a sense of purpose again. It reminds people in recovery that they are worthy because of how they treat people, not because of substances. These core values can also motivate them during hard times when they might feel tired or ashamed or tempted to return to addiction. Focusing on their values of integrity and contributing to their community helps them stay committed to sobriety.
Working to define personal values gives people in recovery an anchor. It gives them a set of beliefs to stand up for so that, no matter what struggles come their way, they know where they stand and what direction they want their life to take. We have created a special guide booklet to help committed people to study and understand human values. You can download the guide below.
