Mental Wellbeing
DEVELOPMENT OF MENTAL STRENGTH
Being in recovery from any ailment requires appropriate physical strength and motivation. To use a few simple examples
The task of taking a 4-mile walk does not require the same physical fitness as running a marathon, but it does require some level of fitness to accomplish the objective.
Lifting 50kg of weight is not a task every person could do without some training and preparation.
In just the same way, a person looking to achieve sustained recovery from dependence on alcohol and drugs is going to need to develop a level of mental strength and determination.
MENTAL WELL-BEING HAS MANY ASPECTS TO IT
The terms ‘mental well-being’ and ‘mental health’ are important concepts that are difficult to define and can be subjective.
Definition of mental health
The World Health Organization (2004) defines mental health in the following way:
'It is a state of well-being, in which the individual realizes their abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and can contribute to their community'
As part of the service offered by the Your Choices Matter programme, we will give you the opportunity to engage in support counselling that helps you to improve your mental well-being, together with some of the techniques and coping mechanisms to support you in sustaining your recovery from dependency on drugs and alcohol.
